Poppers: (Alkyl Nitrates: Amyl, Butyl and Isobutyl) First produced in 1857 as a treatment for angina, amyl nitrite evaporates at room temperature. The vapor released causes your veins and arteries to dilate resulting in the blood flowing faster through the heart and the brain. They are a group of chemicals known as alkyl nitrates that include amyl nitrite, butyl nitrite and isobutyl nitrite. They come as a clear or straw-colored liquid in a small bottle or tube (and used to be sold in glass capsules which made a popping noise when opened – leading to the name.) The vapor is inhaled through the mouth or nose.
Poppers are often found within dance and club culture and some believe they heighten the effects of MDMA. They are also used to enhance sexual experiences. Amyl nitrate is stronger than butyl nitrate. In the UK, butyl is used more than amyl. Even though the drug was initially prescribed as medication for heart conditions such as angina, it is rarely used for this purpose nowadays.
Street Names: Liquid gold, high-tech, rave, rush, ram, thrust, locker room, snappers, hardware, rock hard, kix and TNT.
The Effects: Effects are instantaneous and brief, but intense. These effects are caused by a sudden surge of blood to the heart and brain. Light-headedness, giddiness, heat flush or heightened sensual awareness may also result. This is known as a head rush. Some users may also experience the impression of time slowing down. The effects fade two to five minutes after use. Users are often left with a headache.
On the dance floor it feels like you’ve been hit by a percussive thunderbolt, and if you’re having sex it feels like your sexual organs have grown to Herculean proportions. The effect only lasts for a few moments and you might feel a little light headed for a minute or so afterwards.
The basic effect of poppers is to cause all of the muscles of the body to relax, which is why poppers are so popular among gay men — they make anal intercourse easier. One of the related effects is vasodilatation, or relaxation of blood vessels. This gives the user a warm sensation and causes large amounts of oxygen-bearing blood to rush through the brain, thus giving the user a “rush.” The increase in oxygen leads to a sudden intensification of positive emotions thus, increasing one’s lust and lack of inhibition, encouraging a sense of raw animal sexuality.
Sex on Poppers: When poppers are inhaled shortly before orgasm, the user may experience a sense of exhilaration and acceleration, a freeing of inhibition of movement and vocalization, and perception of orgasm as prolonged, intense and exalted. The mind’s eye may be filled with rapidly changing patterns of color and shape, often containing symbolic representations of the sexual moment.
“A bottle of poppers can make mediocre sex good, and good sex spectacular. Instead of being “me having sex,” I become sex itself, and the experience can be overwhelming.”
Brands: There are many different brands with varying effects, out there. Here are a few –
RUSH –You see Rush in every 24-hour bodega. It’s the most well-known brand and it’s pretty standard fare. The effects of sniffing it go away really quick, like 15 seconds at the most, which is average unless you’re already drunk or on other drugs too and then it seems to last longer. You sniff it, it gives you a head rush and your face flushes and you laugh and that’s it. However, if you use it in a sexual setting, it’s totally different because you’re not laughing. Your butthole opens right up [popping noise]. It’s easy access, and it’s less work for you. It’s a shortcut to the ass.
BOLT – This one is mild and has more of a chemical smell. I guess the name is supposed to appeal to butch construction workers or something? Some guys who love poppers want you to hold the bottle under their nose the whole time you’re doing them from behind. But the problem is that if the rim of the bottle touches your nose for too long, it burns. So you can tell if someone’s been doing a lot of poppers because their nostrils are all red and inflamed. You have to be careful.
JUNGLE JUICE – At Folsom Street East, the annual leather fair in Chelsea, they had a booth selling this brand. They had “regular” and “platinum,” so I asked the slave selling it what the difference was and he said there wasn’t one. He was like, ‘No difference, some guys just like silver.” Queens are very particular. This one’s pretty standard.
The Risks: Side effects of sniffing poppers (especially repeated sniffing) may include headaches, nausea, coughing, dizziness, and in serious instances users may completely pass out. Regular use can cause skin problems around the mouth and nose. If spilled, poppers can burn the skin. Alkyl nitrites reduce blood pressure. This makes it dangerous for people with anemia, glaucoma, breathing or heart problems. Poppers can be fatal if swallowed. Mixing Viagra with alkyl nitrites is very dangerous as the combination could cause your blood pressure to drop dangerously low. It can cause dizziness, fainting and heart problems, not to mention the possibility of coma, brain damage and possibly even death.
